What counts as Agriculture, forestry and food

The industry links two parts that are separate in the statistics: agriculture and forestry (ÖNACE section A) and the manufacture of food and beverages (divisions 10 and 11 in section C).

For agriculture and forestry, Statistics Austria counts holdings in the farm structure survey, not in the structural business statistics. Many holdings are family businesses without a website; the address is often the only reliable contact channel.

Agriculture is outside the Trade Act

There is no public directory of agricultural holdings comparable to the trade licence register.

Trade Act
The Trade Act does not apply to agriculture and forestry (§ 2(1) no. 1 GewO). Agricultural holdings are therefore usually not in GISA.
Food manufacturers
Bakeries, butchers and breweries, by contrast, carry on a trade and are in GISA; companies are also in the companies register. The GISA search is for individual enquiries.
Farm structure survey
Statistics Austria surveys the structure of agricultural and forestry holdings using a sample and extrapolates the results. The figure describes the market and contains no details of individual holdings.

Farmer or manufacturer: two very different target groups

A wine grower with its own cellar can be in 01.21 (growing of grapes) or 11.02 (manufacture of wine from grape), depending on its focus. If you want wine growers and wineries, ask for both classes.

Most agricultural and forestry holdings are family businesses, i.e. natural persons. For a postal mailing, the information duty under Art. 14 GDPR and the right to object apply.

Sales calls and marketing emails require prior consent (§ 174 TKG 2021), also for farm shops and direct sellers.

Example request

We sell labelling machines and are looking for manufacturers in divisions 10 and 11 in Lower Austria and Burgenland, plus wine growers (01.21) with their own website, for a postal mailing with a trade fair invitation. How many records is that?
