Companies register and legal notice as the source of identity

Wholesalers are often companies and therefore easy to identify.

Firmenbuch
Registered businesses must state company name, legal form, seat, register number and register court on websites and business letters (§ 14 UGB).
VAT ID
In cross-border trade almost all wholesalers state their VAT ID. It can be checked using the EU’s VIES system and is a good key for matching against your own CRM.
Commercial agents
Commercial agents are often sole traders with a small office. They represent several manufacturers; which ones is shown only on their website.

Range rather than size: how to select wholesalers

The groups in division 46 follow the product range. If you are looking for sales partners for building materials, you need 46.73; for food, 46.3. Class 46.90 contains wholesalers without a focus and is of little use for targeted outreach.

Wholesale and manufacturing overlap: many manufacturers sell directly to retailers. They are listed under their manufacturing class, not in wholesale.

Marketing emails and sales calls to wholesalers require prior consent (§ 174 TKG 2021). A letter is suitable for a first approach.
